Zircon is a natural stone and a rare gem. In fact, it is much rarer than diamonds!
These gems are not to be confused with Cubic Zirconia (CZ) which is a man-made substance.
Zircon also comes closer to resembling diamonds than any other natural gem. Its superior luster and intense fire give it a real sparkle that is comparable to a diamond.
Zircon is said to have been derived from either the Persian language, simply meaning "golden coloured" or from the Arabic word for red, "zarkun". As one of the oldest gems to be set into jewellery, it may not be surprising that it has been known by many different names in the past.
In the Middle Ages, zircons were believed to induce sleep, as well as promote honor and wisdom.
